Before he ever picked up a brush with intent, Alejandro Martínez-Peña was trained to think in structure, earning his degree in Architecture from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in 1979. He then headed to Milan for postgraduate study at the Politecnico di Milano. It's a foundation you can still feel in his fine art today: even at its most expressive, there's an architect's sense of composition underneath.
Through every shift in style and every new city, one thing hasn't moved: his belief that original art carries a responsibility, to reflect the social and environmental realities of the moment, and to leave the viewer a little changed. As he puts it, “if a fraction of this audience is able to experience a positive change in their consciousness when observing my work, all my effort and intention in the artistic process are justified for me”. It's this rare mix of technical training, restless exploration, and quiet conviction that makes Martínez-Peña's paintings and his story worth discovering.
Evolution has played out on some notable walls. As a museum and gallery artist, his work has been exhibited at the Mingei International Museum in San Diego, the Museo Histórico Regional de Ensenada, the China Millennium Monument International Art Museum in Beijing, Bellevue Arts Museum in Washington, and the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. Alejandro’s works have long-standing representation at contemporary art galleries including Casa Valencia Galería (NTC Liberty Station, San Diego), Galería Pez Gordo (San José del Cabo), ADC Contemporary Art Gallery (Los Angeles), and Coral Gables International Art Center (Miami).
The Works of Martinez-Peña | Across his collection, Martínez-Peña moves fluidly between two emotional registers. One current runs hot: canvases awash in crimson, gold, and amber, built from jagged linework, scattered organic clusters, and passages of raw black that ground the color in something almost geological. The other current runs cool and liquid with deep blues, mossy greens, and turquoise fields that feel less painted than grown, with coral-like tendrils, drifting sediment, and shell-like forms that summon an underwater world just out of reach. Even the quieter, more muted pieces carry that same tension between structure and dissolve, order and drift.
What ties it all together is Martínez-Peña's architect's eye for composition paired with a willful refusal to stay contained. Hard-edged geometric shapes surface again and again. A slab of gray, a slice of cobalt, a shard of turquoise netting,b only to be swallowed by loose, gestural mark-making and organic bloom. Faces and figures occasionally flicker into view before dissolving back into abstraction, echoes of his early years as a figurative painter. The result is a body of work that feels less like a fixed style and more like a living process: color as weather, form as memory, each canvas a different moment in the same ongoing exploration.
